Frequently asked

What does NZCE stand for?

New Zealand Certificate of Education. It's the new Year 12 qualification replacing NCEA Level 2 from 2029.

How many subjects do I need to take?

At least five subjects a year. You need to pass a minimum of three of them to earn the certificate.

What counts as a pass?

A C grade or higher in a subject. The full scale runs A+, A, B, C, D, E. Below a C does not count as a pass for the subject.

Are exams compulsory now?

Yes. Every subject includes both internal assessment and an external exam. The weighting between the two depends on the subject.

How many assessments per year?

Around three to four assessments in every subject across the year, plus the final exam.

When does NZCE start?

Year 12 students will sit NZCE for the first time in 2029. Current Year 9 students (in 2026) are the first cohort.

Will universities accept NZCE for entry?

Yes — it is the official Year 12 secondary qualification. Detailed University Entrance rules will be confirmed by NZQA and the universities ahead of the 2029 rollout.
