If you're already in NCEA
You finish on NCEA. Full stop.
The Ministry of Education has confirmed no student will be forced to switch systems mid-school. Here's what that means by year level.
Your year (in 2026)
Year 13 in 2026
NCEA Level 3 in 2026 — last year of school under the existing system. Nothing changes for you.
Year 12 in 2026
NCEA Level 2 in 2026, NCEA Level 3 in 2027. You finish school under NCEA, no switch.
Year 11 in 2026
NCEA Level 1 in 2026, then Level 2 in 2027, Level 3 in 2028. You’re entirely on NCEA.
Year 10 in 2026
NCEA Level 1 in 2027 under the existing system. Years 12 and 13 transition rules are still being confirmed by the Ministry — but the “no mid-school switch” rule applies, so you’ll either complete NCEA or get a clearly-defined bridged pathway.
Year 9 in 2026
You’re the first cohort on the new system. Year 11 in 2028 (new curriculum + Foundational Award), Year 12 in 2029 (NZCE), Year 13 in 2030 (NZACE).
Year 8 or below
You’ll do the new system end-to-end. Year 11 from 2029 onwards.
What this means in practice
- If you’re collecting NCEA credits now, keep going. They count.
- University Entrance for current NCEA students works the same as it does today.
- NZQA will keep recording, awarding, and certifying NCEA results during the transition.
- Schools will still teach the NCEA curriculum to senior cohorts already on it, even while younger years move to the new curriculum.
