Assessment

The new A+ to E grading scale.

One letter grade per subject. C or higher is a pass. Replaces NCEA's Achieved / Merit / Excellence per-standard system.

Under the new system, every subject you take ends with one gradeon a six-point scale. Internal assessments and the external exam both feed into that grade — you don’t see them as separate results on your certificate.

What counts as a pass?

A C grade or higher in a subject counts as a pass for that subject. To earn NZCE or NZACE, you need to pass at least three subjects out of five.

Internal + external, one final grade

Every subject in NZCE and NZACE includes both internal assessment (coursework through the year) and an external exam. The two combine into the single subject grade. The weighting between them depends on the subject — practical subjects lean more on internal work, academic subjects lean more on the exam.

What your certificate will show

  • The qualification name (NZCE or NZACE).
  • The number of subjects you passed.
  • A grade for every subject you sat.

Compared to the current NCEA system — which lists dozens of individual standards — the new transcript is meant to be readable at a glance.
