The credit system
NCEA credits, in plain English.
What credits are, how many you need, what they buy you — and what happens to them when NCEA is replaced by NZCE.

What an NCEA credit is
An NCEA credit is a unit of academic achievement. Each piece of assessment you sit (called a standard) is worth a set number of credits — usually 2 to 6 credits. You pass a standard by demonstrating the skills it tests, graded as Achieved, Merit, or Excellence.
Standards are split into two types:
- Internal standards are assessed by your school during the year — essays, lab reports, oral presentations, art portfolios.
- External standards are sat in the national November exams run by NZQA.
How many credits you need
Level 1 (Year 11)
80 credits total. Must include 10 literacy credits and 10 numeracy credits.
Level 2 (Year 12)
80 credits total. At least 60 must be at Level 2 or above. The remaining 20 can be from any level.
Level 3 (Year 13)
80 credits total. At least 60 must be at Level 3 or above. The remaining 20 can be from Level 2 or above.
University Entrance (UE)
On top of NCEA Level 3: 14 credits in each of 3 UE-approved subjects, plus 10 UE literacy credits (5 reading + 5 writing) and 10 UE numeracy credits.
Endorsements: pushing past Achieved
You can earn extra recognition by hitting higher grades:
- Course Endorsement — 14 credits at Merit or Excellence in a single subject.
- Certificate Endorsement — 50 credits at Merit or Excellence across your NCEA level.
Endorsements show up on your Record of Achievement and are often referenced by universities for scholarship decisions.
What happens to the credit system under NZCE
Credits are an NCEA thing. The new system NZCE and NZACEdoesn’t use them. Instead:
- You take at least 5 whole subjects per year.
- Each subject ends with one letter grade A+ to E.
- You earn the qualification by passing at least 3 subjects at C or higher.
- Year 11 students sit a separate Foundational Award for literacy and numeracy — no credits required.
Common questions
How many credits do you need for each NCEA level?
80 credits for each level. Level 1: 80 credits with 10 literacy and 10 numeracy. Level 2: 80 credits, with at least 60 at Level 2 or above. Level 3: 80 credits with at least 60 at Level 3 or above.
Do NCEA credits still count after the NCEA replacement?
Yes — for any student currently on NCEA. The Ministry has confirmed no student will be switched mid-school. If you've already started NCEA, your credits stay valid and count toward your NCEA qualification.
How many credits is each standard worth?
Usually 2 to 6 credits depending on the standard. Bigger pieces of work (essays, projects, exams) are worth more credits than smaller skills checks.
Can NCEA credits carry over between years?
Yes. Credits earned in Year 11 contribute toward your Level 1 total. Some Level 2 students also pick up Level 1 credits along the way, and these can backfill an incomplete Level 1.
What happens to credits under NZCE?
NZCE doesn't use credits. It works on whole-subject grades (A+ to E). Students take at least five subjects per year and pass three at C or higher to earn the qualification. The credit system ends with NCEA.
